A manual blood cuff works like a baloon, when you squeeze the pump it inflates a small sack inside the cuff and the meter tells you how much pressure is inside the cuff. What are the steps in taking a blood pressure? You take a blood pressure by first wrapping the corect size cuff around the patient's arm. Then you squeeze the cuff untill you get to around 140 on the gauge. Turn the small dial on the pump to slowly release the air. Write down the number on the dial when you hear the first sound and put it on top, and the number where you hear the last sound on bottom. What sounds are you listening for? The sounds you hear when you take a blood pressure is the patient's pulse. What do the systolic and diastolic numbers mean? What are the symptoms of high blood pressure? People with high blood pressure may experience damage may occur in major organs, such as the heart, brain, and kidneys, as well as in the small blood vessels in the eyes What are the risk factors for having high blood pressure? High blood pressure usually has no symptoms, but you should call a doctor if you have it. What does have to do with blood pressure? Salt in your blood attracts water, and when to much water is in your blood it raises your blood pressure. Transcript: Blood Pressure Blood Pressure is defined as pressure exerted by circulating blood upon the walls of blood vessels and is one of the principle vital signs. Systolic: the top number; should always be higher; this measures the pressure in the arteries when the heart beats. Diastolic: the bottom number; the lower of the two numbers; measures the pressure in the arteries between heartbeats. Causes of high blood pressure are: overweight, smoking, too much salt, lack of physical activity, too much alcohol, stress, older age, genetics, family history, adrenal and thyroid disorders, and chronic kidney disease. The only way to detect high blood pressure is to go to a doctor regularly and get your blood pressure checked. For most adults, your systolic number should be between 90 and 120. Normal diastolic ranges between 60 and 80. High blood pressure is categorized as 140/90 and higher. High blood pressure is silent but deadly. It has no symptoms and it can lead to other serious health problems.
